Using the Grid for Satellite Imagery with UNOSAT
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes work which investigates how the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Computing Grid (LCG) can be used to upload, store, compress and download satellite image data files on behalf of the United Nations Organization UNOSAT. Mechanisms for satellite image upload, storage and download are outlined. LCG computational resources are exercised by a JPEG2000 compression framework that transforms UNOSAT’s original GeoTiff images to JPEG2000 ECW files. It is shown how the availability of these functions will aid humanitarian relief efforts by enabling UNOSAT to vastly increase its portfolio of satellite images and to supply images to fieldworkers much more rapidly through precompressed files. Importantly, these benefits arise through zero financial cost to UNOSAT.

Comparing the Capability of Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8 Satellite Imagery in Land Use and Land Cover Mapping Using Pixel-based and Object-based Classification Methods
Introduction: Having accurate and up-to-date information on the status of land use and land cover change is a key point to protecting natural resources, sustainable agriculture management and urban development. Preparing the land cover and land use maps with traditional methods is usually time and cost consuming. Nowadays satellite imagery provides the possibility to prepare these maps in less ...
متن کاملRecognizing the eroded areas using the surface albedo algorithm of Landsat 8 satellite imagery (case study of basin Jajrood)
Soil is one of the most important natural resources of any country. the erosion causes not only the depletion of the soil and the loss of the land, causing great and irreparable damages, but also with the deposition of materials in streams, reservoirs, ports, and reduced pool capacity. Therefore, it should not be underestimated. In this study, we identify and zoning of the erosion areas in the ...
متن کاملApplication of Different Methods of Decision Tree Algorithm for Mapping Rangeland Using Satellite Imagery (Case Study: Doviraj Catchment in Ilam Province)
Using satellite imagery for the study of Earth's resources is attended by manyresearchers. In fact, the various phenomena have different spectral response inelectromagnetic radiation. One major application of satellite data is the classification ofland cover. In recent years, a number of classification algorithms have been developed forclassification of remote sensing data. One of the most nota...
متن کاملValidation of Volunteered Geographic Information Landuse Change Using Satellite Imagery
Land use change monitoring is one of the main concerns of managers and urban planners due to human activities and unbalanced physical development in urban areas. In this paper, a combination of remote sensing data and volunteered geographic information was used to assess the quality of volunteered geographic information on land use and land cover changes monitoring. For this purpose, the ORBVIE...
متن کاملLand Use Monitoring using Satellite Imagery and Its Relationship with Drought in the Doiraj Watershed of Eilam Province
Today, there are many factors affecting watersheds, consequently changing natural ecosystems succession. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of drought events on land use changes at Doiraj Watershed of Ilam Province from 1996 to 2015. For this purpose, Landsat satellite images were used for land use change monitoring and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was applied for dro...
